The Feeling of Stage Presence
I hit my first stage at the age of 12. Performance was definitely not a genetic inheritance but being on stage was something that was definitely in my blood.
As a child watching professionals perform on TV would always trigger the want to be there myself. Not for fame, but for presence…presence within a world of performing arts.
I wouldn’t have known then..but in hindsight, I always knew this was one area of my life which I wanted to develop, and I did.
I once knew a girl at school, maybe sixth form, so shy that I can’t recall ever hearing her voice, the type of girl that blends with the furniture. However, it was all because of one multi-cultural evening showcase that I saw her true colours… Whilst I was organising an act for the finali dance piece, I had accidentally walked in on her solo rehearsal. I caught a glimpse of a white hat and black tight trousers before I quickly apologised and left her to carry on.
Hmm, interesting. . The day of the dress rehearsal.. I was so curious to see what she was going to perform. She came up on stage smiled innocently and held her starting position. It was quite clear she was going to perform a Michael Jackson piece. Now, everyone knows if you are brave enough to choose an MJ track you need to be able to pull off his amazing moves, his old school swagger, his confidence, his sharpness.. Hmm…very interesting!
A lioness had been let out from her cage…I had just experienced a phenomenal female MJ performance! Almost like a dual-personality she had converted herself to everything you would not expect a shy person to be! Every move, every spin was perfected…stage was definitely her place to lose her exterior, shy shell and be involved in a new world of what was within.
Stage is not only a platform to simply perform an art.. but an uplifting, confidence enhancing, place of desire. You love what you do, you show what you can do and you feel indulged in pleasure. That is the feeling. From my view everyone needs to experience it for whatever talent you may have.
